Taller’s theories about high protein and polyunsaturated fats were strongly condemned in 1962 by George Larrick, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, who said that the prescribing of safflower oil capsules for the treatment of obesity (a product that was recommended by Taller, who had an interest in the company) was worse than worthless. Simon and Schuster, who published Calories Don’t Count, refuted the FDA’s charges, saying their vicious attack had no bearing in reality. The same old story from the FDA, which is constantly trying to belittle, besmirch, and downplay attempts to find alternatives to medical treatments that rely on drugs manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, whose products are boldly pushed in doctors’ offices by salespeople from these self-interested companies. (The FDA is also lobbied by drug companies.)

Taller’s popularity defied the criticism and his book wound up selling two million copies. One can still find copies, not in pristine “just published” condition but certainly in good shape. His plan obviously worked, at least for some and at least for a while. Today one of his biggest favorites, and also one of the bestsellers in diet marketing, is krill oil, a good source of the polyunsaturated fats that Taller was advising, along with food plans free of sugar, wheat, grain, and flour. Krill are red shellfish, tiny and plentiful, living in every ocean in the world. Unlike fish oils, krill oil contains no mercury. Krill oil is said to protect against heart attack, improve vision and memory, relieve joint inflammation, slow the aging process, lower cholesterol, improve emotional stability, clear up acne, and improve the immune system.
